Abstract:“Modernity”is a key concept in overseas Chinese literary studies and the common theoretical pursuit of several generations of scholars.Its derivative concepts of literary modernity and cultural modernity lay a foundation for the representative research paradigm of overseas Chinese literary studies.It was first proposed in the study of May 4th Movement and Weber's theory of modernity,which coincided with the Cold War,therefore has a clear political presupposition.Later,due to the academic practice of Jaroslav Prusek and the Xia brothers (XIA Zhi-qing and XIA JI'an),“modernity”was introduced into Chinese literary studies,and the study of modern Chinese literature initiated by the Xia brothers was the mainstream.And “obsession with China”is an important reflection of Chih-tsing Hisa's interpretation of modernity.In the 1980s,the “enlightenment/decadent modernity”proposed by LI Ou-fan and the “self-discovering modernity”proposed by Der-wei WANG assume the role of inheriting the past and ushering in the future in the overseas Chinese literary studies.They systematically present modernity-related discussions in overseas Chinese literary studies,and advance the multiple interpretation of “modernity”,and the concept of “modernity”also shows the transition to “cultural modernity”due to its internal transcendence.
