Abstract:Aesthetics is essential to the establishment and development of the discipline of overseas Chinese modern literature.With the development of the discipline,its research paradigm shows the transition from highlighting literariness/aestheticism from de-political standpoint of view,to culture-oriented approaches with little and even no attention to literariness/aestheticism,and then to much attention given to literariness/aesthetics,history and modernity and the re-examination of their relations in the post-theory era.Taking “decadence”as an important starting point,overseas Chinese scholars consciously projected the western aesthetic modernity theory into the study of modernist novels in the 1930s and 1940s,and conducted a unique cultural observation of the aesthetic modernity of modern Chinese literature.They are cautious about the applicability of western critical theories,and show a cognition trend that is different from the traditional historical and aesthetic view of literature of Chinese mainland.The overseas study of Chinese modern literature and the observation of aesthetic modernity of Chinese modern literature from the perspective of western critical theory are interrelated.This is of great significance to promoting the formation and construction of trans-regional “Chinese modern poetics”.
