Abstract:Sustained negative population growth and the aging of fewer children have become common challenges faced by the whole world, and this pattern of demographic change adds uncertainty to the modernization of higher education and at the same time creates new needs for its development. That is, to meet the people's demand for quality higher education, to respond to the demand for sustainable development of higher education, and to take care of the demand for high-quality socio-economic development. The process of modernization of higher education and the needs of demographic changes are intertwined, and both need to take care of the size of the population as a logical starting point, optimize the demographic structure as a logical route, and improve the quality of the population as a logical destination. In the future, the demographic pattern will continue to change, and the modernization of higher education needs to face the challenges and grasp the chances. While grasping the demand and internal logic of the modernization of higher education, we have re-conceptualized the way forward: building a new ecosystem of “digital and intellectual fusion”, continuously improving the digital governance system, and accelerating the digital transformation of higher education; optimizing the allocation of resources in higher education, exploring innovative modes of talent cultivation, and continuously fostering and exporting the new quality productive forces; taking care of the global common good, and upgrading the level of internationalization of higher education; and constructing a modern lifelong education system, and releasing the dividends of quality of the elderly population. Guided by the practice approach, it realizes the synergy of multiple subjects, forms the multiplier effect to promote the process of modernization of higher education, and completes the leap of Chinese-style modernization of higher education from good to great in the midst of uncertainty.
