| Stigma Scale for the Siblings of the Mentally Disabled, Its Validity and Reliability |

Abstract Among all kinds of disadvantaged and ethnic minority groups, mentally disabled people are vulnerable to stigmatization. In China, however, there has been little research on the stigmatization of mentally disabled people, and their relatives and care takers in particular. It is important to establish a stigma scale for the siblings of mentally disabled people. Taking into account the population structure and the characteristics of China’s mentally disabled people, we establish a scale on the basis of the stigma scale of Mak and Cheung, and further make evaluation and modification of it through translation, expert evaluation and open interviews. It is an innovative attempt which conforms to Chinese native culture and truly reflects the real life experience and mental health conditions of the siblings of the mentally disabled. We employ Cronbach α, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis to test the reliability and validity of the scale. The results show that this scale is a stable and reliable evaluation tool. It effectively reflects the actual situation of the stigmatization of the healthy siblings of mentally disabled people in China.
