| Types and Validity of Cross-Civilization Studies in Comparative Literature from the Perspective of Variation Theory |

Abstract Cross-civilization studies in comparative literature from the perspective of variation theory is classified into similarity comparison and difference comparison. The similarity comparison emphasizes “seeking similarities” on the basis of equal discourse rather than “assimilation” based on discourse coverage. And the difference comparison includes the influence variation in the influence study, the interpretation variation in the analogy study, and the new category of the analogy study—common topics in different discourse. The influence variation mainly focuses on the real but neglected variation factors in the influence study. The interpretation variation enriches the traditional analogy study in two aspects: the heterogeneity and two-way interaction of discourse, and the connotation analogy and over-interpretation of interpretive availability. Common topics in different discourse, a new category of the analogy study, is a breakthrough in analogy study on the dimension of heterogeneous discourse. All these cross-civilization studies make difference comparison valid, which enriches the theories of comparative literature, and is a comparison of “seeking both similarities and differences” in its true sense.
