Connection between Shenzhen Region and the Marine Silk Road in History

Abstract:In history, Shenzhen region was an important node along the Marine Silk Road. It was closely connected with the countries along the road in economy, culture, military affairs, transportation, and personnel exchanges. The connection was mainly manifested as follows: located in the intersection between great rivers and the sea, Shenzhen region was vital to the Marine Silk Road; with trade system constantly adjusted, Shenzhen region played a leading and pioneering role in Chinese foreign-trade system; Shenzhen region featured in marine economy with frequent exchanges of Chinese and foreign commodities; being an important garrison town, Shenzhen was essential to marine traffic and security; with close communication with foreign countries and constant cultural exchanges, Shenzhen was first introduced to Buddhism from the sea. Besides, it is an important location for “Ci Sha (辞沙)” culture, and the ancestral homes for many overseas Chinese.
