Abstract：TANG Yi-jie explored ways to combine Confucianism with Marxism no later than 1983. He emphasized the necessity of combining Confucianism with Marxism with an eye to achieving socialism with Chinese characteristics and making significant contribution to mankind. He pointed out there are many similarities between Confucianism and Marxism in social ideals, practical character, human nature and unity of opposites, and they are complementary in economy, law and tradition, and ethics, so that it is possible to combine Confucianism with Marxism. TANG’s thought reveals his confidence in Chinese culture, great vision, and courage as a theorist. It is of great significance to construct contemporary Chinese ideology which has inherent quality and authority to make Chinese nation highly identified ideologically so as to be united to achieve the comprehensive rejuvenation of Chinese nation.
