Abstract:In contemporary movie industry, in chronological sense, “the sixth generation filmmakers” are called “the urban generation” by Western academics. They use their cameras focusing on the ever changing urban society, and try to engage into a dialogue with their Western counterparts in aesthetics. The “absent” Chinese traditional culture is actually “present” in all their movies, providing them with rich spiritual nourishment. As to the techniques, the Italian Neo-realism, the French New Wave, and American New Hollywood allow them a deeper understanding of modernity. Their movies, aesthetically linking tradition and reality, and East and West, are shaped to have a holistic view of aesthetics with a bit of “neo-realism”.
