Abstract:Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, relying on the vertical and horizontal water network and civilian ship transportation, commodity circulation in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has become increasingly active. In modern times, the opening of Hankou and Shashi for trade promoted the continuous improvement of the trade and transportation status of this region. Against this background, new modes of transportation such as ships and railways were opened one after another. However, traditional civilian ship transportation has not withdrawn from the stage of history, but has shown a trend of continuation and innovation. However, the sources of civilian ships are more diverse, ship types have increased significantly, and there are a large number of rowing ships, Southern ships, Sichuan ships, and civilian ships from Shaanxi, Henan, and Jiangxi. Distributed in various ports and commercial ports in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. on the other hand, in order to adapt to the needs of bulk commodity transportation, civilian ship transportation has been flexible and actively looking for new business modes and business sources, and its operating methods have become diversified. In order to deal with abuses in the transportation process, local officials and private industry organizations work together, guided by government policies, to continuously strengthen the supervision and management of civilian ship transportation, promote its gradual standardization, and achieve the initial transformation of the modern civilian ship transportation industry. In this process, traditional industry habits formed over a long period of time are still continuing. The sustainable development of the civilian ship transportation industry in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in modern times has been mainly affected by the changes in modern trade patterns and trade routes. At the same time, the development of regional industrialization has greatly increased the demand for raw materials and fuels such as cotton and coal. Civilian ships have relied on their ability to carry out bulk cargoes, its transportation advantages and flexible and diverse management methods to occupy an important position in the modern transportation industry.
