Abstract:In early 1920s, a fierce competition in academic culture happened between the two prestigious universities of the time, Beijing University and Southeast University. Critical Review and New Youth were the two major new media frontlines. They debated with tit-for-tat arguments on the issues such as old and new literature, real and fake literature, virtues and drawbacks of classical Chinese and modern vernacular Chinese, Confucius and traditional culture, neohumanism and experimentalism. On the surface, the debates centered on the battle between tradition and modernity, but they actually also went beyond the conflict between China and the western world. Their debates indicate the thorny issue of how to handle the relationship between Chinese traditional culture and western modernity. This phenomenon also became the geographical and factional source of “the academic division between north and south” in Republic of China in 1930s.
