Abstract:The continental shelf of East China Sea includes the overlapped areas claimed by both China and Japan. In respect of continental shelf delimitation between adjacent and opposite States, only does general rule exist in international law. On this issue,Japan asserts equidistance principle while China insists on natural prolongation principle to achieve equity. In international law perspective, natural prolongation forms the cornerstone of continental shelf concept, therefore China’s position should be supported. The dispute between China and Japan should be setlled through peaceful means.
