Abstract:Using western archetype criticism theory to analyze the female images in New China’s (1949—1976) literary works, we find Nvwa archetype of ancient China in female images in this period: they are endowed with rich cultural connotation representing harvest and reproduction; the creation of characters are based on the archetype of heroines; women in those stories are all selfless to benefit the career of collectivism, and are also miserable spokespeople for the oppressed. The reoccurrence of Nvwa archetype in the literary works of this period is closely linked to the contemporary social environment, the impact of Yan’an literature and art, and the folk art background and so forth.
