Abstract Taking the “University General Education Alliance” as a study object, the article reviews general education reforms of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University and Sun Yat-sen University. Comparison and study of the characteristics of Chinese traditional culture curriculum in these four universities shows: they all boast adequate Chinese traditional culture courses in humanities, but differ in course arrangement; most courses use similar topics and teaching methods and have large classes and overload credits demands for undergraduates; traditional culture curriculum has large potential as hidden curriculum. To improve cultural qualities of Chinese university students, firstly, we need to make Chinese traditional culture curriculum the core curriculum in general education and a basic requirement for undergraduates. Secondly, we need to bring the idea of “integration of theory and history” into curriculum arrangement and make sure the core curriculum plays a substantial role. Thirdly, we need to involve reading, lecturing and discussing in teaching, explore and integrate education resources, and improve general curriculum system, so as to help college students foster a sense of national and cultural identity and share a common core value.
