Interpretation of Guaxiang and Guanyi in Shuogua by Mathematical Logic |

Abstract Shuogua is a classical book about guaxiang (hexagrams) and the nature of bagua (eight trigrams). Modern Yijing studies tend to analyse the nature of bagua from the angle of contradictory relationship. As for what are the four pairs of contradictions in bagua, there are mainly two views among academics. One is that the opposite relationship between yin and yang determines the contradictory relationship between eight trigrams, the other is that the fact that each pair of hexagrams are “fei fu ji fan (either reversed or opposite)” determines the contradictory relationship between eight trigrams. It is generally believed what the contradictory relationship in bagua reflects are philosophy issues, but actually also mathematical problems. Analysis of guaxiang from the angle of the opposite and complementary relationship between yin and yang corresponds to binary Boolean algebra, analysis of the contradictions of guaxiang from “fei fu ji fan” hexagrams corresponds to Tai Chi algebra quaternary logical model. But binary Boolean algebra goes contrary to Tai Chi’s thought of yin and yang. For example, kungua is taken as null set and makes the subset of “liuzi (six trigrams, namely zhen, xun, kan, li, gen, and dui). Tai Chi algebra quaternary logical model proves: Shuogua is a paper on logic with rich mathematical logic connotation. To be specific, bagua are eight logic paradigms (equations) constituting a relatively complete logic system. In Shuagua, the correspondence between bagua and human form is actually the representation of a logic diagram with human form. The new logic structure in Shuogua is the mathematical basis for the construction of general Tai Chi algebra.
