Abstract:Exploring the practical forms of rural motherhood serves as a crucial lens for understanding the integration of family structures during the modernization transition. Through field research, this study identifies family development goals as the core variable influencing differences in rural maternal practices. In the process of maternal practice, rural mothers adopt corresponding parenting strategies based on variations in family development goals. From the perspectives of both family development capacity and family development motivation, rural maternal practices can be categorized into four types: survival-oriented, striving-oriented, companionship-oriented, and quality-oriented. Among these, survival-oriented maternal practice sets “raising children to adulthood” as its parenting goal, adopting a phase-based involvement strategy; striving-oriented maternal practice aims for children’s achievement of primary urbanization, forming a guided participation strategy; companionship-oriented maternal practice focuses on cultivating moral integrity as its parenting objective, developing a moderate involvement approach; quality-oriented maternal practice targets the enhancement of children’s comprehensive quality, implementing an all-round participation strategy. These differences reflect the emergence of a development-oriented family model in Chinese society, yet significant developmental heterogeneity exists within it, leading to distinct maternal roles in parenting. Rural maternal practices do not follow a uniform path of modernity. Instead, they take on diverse forms due to variations in family development capacities and motivations, thereby giving rise to differentiated patterns of family upbringing.
