Abstract:The revival of ritual studies in the Qing Dynasty was the result of correcting the empty and sparse academic style of the late Ming Dynasty, responding to the call for Confucianism's own “purification” and social morality, and the comprehensive effect of the Qing government's policy of stabilizing public opinion. Looking at the history of ritual studies in the Qing Dynasty over the past two hundred years, “textual research” and “learning from the world” are two parallel development paths, and “mutual verification of the three rituals” is its unique characteristic. In the 19th century, the pursuit of the practical application of ritual studies reached its peak. This is not only a response of academic research to social changes, but also a need for the development of ritual studies themselves. The research on ritual studies in the Qing Dynasty was fruitful, with empirical evidence of ancient classic ritual systems, verified Confucian ritual texts, highlighted social functions of ritual classics in the process of organization, research, and dissemination, and excavated cultural functions of ritual studies serving society. But there are also some shortcomings: although emphasizing the maintenance of Confucian epistemological empiricism, it does not take into account the “theoretical distortion” of ritual studies constructed by Song and Ming Neo Confucian scholars through metaphysics; Although advocating for governing the classics and seeking righteousness, there is an excessive emphasis on bringing the theoretical form of ritual studies back to social reality, resulting in a lack of enthusiasm for pursuing righteousness on the basis, and thus failing to find a good balance between academia and reality.
