Abstract:Since Ming and Qing Dynasties, the cultural exchange between China and the Western world has been oriented of world history and Chinese history. The reconstruction of the funeral ritual, the most import ritual in one’s life, came to be influenced by western culture. After Chaoshan was opened for foreign trade, the missionaries of American Baptist Missionary Union brought some American funeral ritual elements into that region. Based on both religious belief and secular life, the funeral rituals of the baptists in Chaoshan generally followed local traditions with the anti-church elements removed and some Christian rituals embedded. When embedding the Christian rituals, people not only referred to the actual funerals of some missionaries, but also localized them with great care, from which developed China’s own Christian funeral culture.
