Abstract:History is composed of countless individual experiences. Life experiences of individual historians reflect the development of historiography. Fang Zhiguang is an expert in Chinese modern history. His academic career, in some way, mirrors the progression of historiography in new China and the concern of new China’s historians for history. In his study, Fang “only seeks to tell right from wrong, nothing else.” He insists history study be guided by Marxist historical materialism?theory and works on the principles of truth-seeking and pragmaticism. His attitude toward history study, his research method, and principles will exert great impact upon the development of today’s Chinese history study.
