Abstract：Family situation, family structure and its development tendency are closely related to social development, especially to economy, politics and culture in current society, which exert great impact, without exception, upon the existing family structure. Based on census data and analysis and comparison of relevant data in the statistical yearbook, we can generalize three characteristics of current Chinese family structure: miniaturization of family size, nucleation of family structure and diversification of family types. From the perspective of population policy, the strict implementation of the national policy of family planning has led to a fall in birthrate. Socially and economically, the urbanization process has been accelerated. Ideologically, the changing concepts of fertility, pension and family have transformed the pattern of family structure. All these are the causes of the present situation and development trend of China’s family structure.
