Abstract:Endowed with rich emotional and figurative meaning, color has special connotative meaning. With unique aesthetic and cultural value, color language has important directive features in the development of human history. The Bei-Shan dresses with the horsetail-based embroidery are not only exquisite and unique in terms of technique, but also have gorgeous and splendid colors. Probing into the semantic cause of its color language and unique connotations reflected in the folk culture, the author of this paper concludes color of the Bei-Shan dresses symbolizes ancient Shui people’s social status, intelligence, happiness, wealth, familial affection, love, and the psychological need of original aesthetics. With rich connotation, the color of the Bei-Shan dresses of the horsetail-based embroidery has become an artistic expression of feelings in the national and folk culture of Shui people. It plays a special role in specific historical periods and circumstances of life which is irreplaceable by any other artistic language.
