Abstract In the 1990s, there was an ardent call for “humanistic spirit” and a great discussion on the “humanistic spirit” in aesthetics and literary theory in the new era. This big discussion essentially shows the sense of crisis, responsibility and mission of aesthetics and literary theory in the new era. Aesthetics and literary theory should first conform to the needs of the socialist market economy and the general public, and face up to the recession of “pure literature” and the prosperity of “popular literature”. At the same time, we should unswervingly uphold and carry forward “humanistic spirit”, and theoretically clarify the merits of “joking one's way through life”, “trifling with literary creation”, “rejecting nobleness” and so on, and truly realize the great mission.
