From Brothels to Jianghu: The Transformation of Secular Space Writing and the Classic Beauty of Song and Qing Ci |

Abstract As a natural attribute of Ci, “secular” is also the difference between it and Poetry. The writing of “secular space” not only reflects the unique attributes of Ci, but also highlights the evolution trajectory of Ci. It is an important clue to sort out the history of Ci. The writing of “brothels and mansion” in Song Ci and “Jianghu” in Qing Ci are the two key stages. The depiction of secular space in Song Ci revolves around the courtyard of a song tower, symbolizing the space of secular love. The imagery of “building” and “curtain”, as well as the layered use of poetic techniques, play an important role; The spatial writing of Qing Ci is centered around the Jianghu, reflecting the secular fame and fortune space. It is characterized by the imagery of “secular houses”, “solitary boats” and “windows”, highlighting the bitterness and sadness of the poetry of the humble scholars. From “brothels and mansion” to “Jianghu”, it reflects the common adherence of Song and Qing Ci to the writing of “private space”. The reason for the evolution of Qing Ci is closely related to the unique imperial examination ecology of the Qing Dynasty. From the Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, the differences in the writing style and customs of Ci not only reflect the causes of the classic beauty of Song and Qing Ci, but also reflect the complex relationship between the two's positive evolution. Space writing is an important perspective for examining the evolution of the history of Ci, and it is also an area that urgently needs to be deeply explored in the study of traditional Chinese poetry.
